Welcome back to your weekly dose of all things Yankee.
It was not a good week for the Yankees. They end the week at 3 wins and 4 losses. So what's right, what's wrong and what needs to happen next. Let's take a spin and find out.
Grading The New Additions:
Xavier Nady - In the nine games since he started Nady has a .400 BA with 12 hits and 4 HR's. Grade - A.
Richie Sexson - In 15 games Sexson has had only 5 hits, mostly in relief and has a .276 BA. Grade - C.
Ivan Rodriguez - In 4 games Pudge has only had 3 hits and is batting .231 However he has been great behind the plate. Still to early though so I will give this a Grade - C as well.
Damaso Marte - In 5 games Marte is 0-1 with an eye-popping 11.57 ERA! His play has not been that good over these 4.1 innings. Grade - F!
Injuries - Joba went down and the Dr. is still out on this injury. He blew it in the 5th inning last night before going out holding his shoulder. Cano sat out a few games due to being plunked on the wrist this week.
Pitching - Joba has gone down with an unknown injury. Rasner has been sent to the bullpen after being given a long leash and not performing too well as a starter of late. His slot is being filed by 1-3 Dan Giese.
Hitting - Giambi shaved the mustache and had a great run at the plate last night. Cano, Nady, A-Rod, etc are having a good run right now but collectively did not produce the needed run support this week to bring in some more victories.
Conclusion - The Yankees need to step it up the rest of this year The Devil Rays are on a tear this year and the Red Sox are winning just enough games to stay ahead of the Yanks in the Wild Card Race. The Yanks need to put together another W streak to have a realistic chance at the post season. It's not time to panic yet but the W's need to happen more than they did this week.

The Yankees Report
Welcome back to the Yankees Report.
In the last week the Yankees continued their post All-Star winning streak. They went 8-0 and both Oakland and Minnesota fell to the Yanks. Boston was next on the schedule and the Yankees only had to sweep the Boston series to move into a 1st place tie in the Wild Card race. The Bronx Bombers took the first two games and things looked great for a sweep but then the wheels came off the bus.
The Yankees fell to Boston and were soundly beaten last night by the Orioles.
In the week that was let's look at how the Yanks are faring in other areas:
Trades - The Yankees picked up OF Xavier Nagy and LHP Damaso Marte from the Pirates while losing 4 minor league prospects. (RHPs Jeff Karstens, Daniel McCutchen and Ross Ohlendorf and OF Jose Tabata) This was an excellent trade for the Yankees and should yield an immediate impact. Other names floating around this week are Barry Bonds and Jarrod Washburn. I don't see the Yanks picking up Bonds now that they have Nagy. The Washburn trade could still happen.
Injuries - Posada will have season ending surgery in the next week or so. Matsui is going to try to come back in the next 2 weeks. Hughes is working his way back up through the minors and in more shocking news Carl Pavano is also making his way back from injuries!
Pitching - The Yanks still need some reliable back end pitching. Ponson and Rasner are holding their own but are not viable long-term options. Marte is working into the bullpen and LaTroy Hawkins was designated for assignment.
Hitting/Fielding - Cano has been on a tear since shortly before the All-Star break and has seen his BA rise quite a bit. Nagy debuted in Yankee Stadium last night and adjusted well to Left Field at Yankee Stadium. Last night Nagy to Jeter to Molina were able to catch an Oriole at home plate stopping one run.
HOF - The Goose was inducted into the HOF this past week. In an emotional ceremony Goose Gossage talked about his career and his love for the Yankees. Many former Yankee players were in attendance and in a classy move Yankee GM Brian Cashman was there to show support as well. This brings the Yankee contingent (Those inducted as Yankees )in the Hall to 20.

The Yankee Report
The All-Star game was very good to the Yankees.
Since the end of the game the Yankees are on a 4 game winning streak. They have outscored opponents 25-9. These victories have helped them to move closer to the top of the standings especially in the race for the Wild Card.
They recently passed Oakland and are now chasing down the Twins.
So at the midway point how do the Yankees look?
Starting Pitching - The Yankees are continuing their struggles in this area as they have the last few years. With Chien-Ming Wang down for the foreseeable future and Hughes injured as well the Yanks were relying on Kennedy who was so ineffective they sent him back to AAA. Mussina seems to have found a fountain of youth and has surprised management and fans with his performance this year. Pettitte has also performed admirably over the season. From there it has not looked good as the Yanks have rotated many pitcher in and out looking for the right mix. Ponson is 2-0 since joining the Yanks from the Rangers. Chamberlain and Rasner are not as effective as the Yanks would like either.
Relief Pitching - Surprisingly relief pitching has been a bit stronger this year though still not where it needs to be. Rivera has been quite effective in relief and has not blown a save opportunity this year. If the season ended today he would have the lowest ERA for a season than any year of his career!
Hitting/Fielding - Giambi is having a good hitting year but Cano and Jeter are down as it Cabrera. A-Rod, Abreu and Damon are effective but Damon has missed some time due to injuries. Giambi's FPCT is actually higher than it has been in 5 years!
Injuries - There again is the rub. Posada is out for the year and will have season ending surgery. It was advised that Matsui have season ending surgery as well but he has so far declined this option with the hopes of making it back later in the season. Numerous injuries to the outfielders and pitchers have taken a toll.
So in conclusion if the Yanks can continue on the tear they are on right now they have a good shot art making the Wild Card spot. I don't see them taking their Division as Tampa Bay has been surprisingly good this year. The key will be the back end of the starting rotation and great hitting to put up the kind of numbers we have seen the last 4 games.
